If single-pass multi-scanning is enabled, each line of data from the CCD is read multiple times and combined (averaged) while being stored in the memory buffer. Scanning an image involves: optionally focusing the scanner, setting up the exposure time for the CCD area to be scanned, number of bits per sample, number of samples per pixel, scan resolution, and then reading the raw CCD data into VueScan’s memory buffer. The Save button starts from the raw CCD data in memory and only performs the processing step. The Preview button and Scan button perform both the scanning and processing steps. These two things are done in steps, and it’s useful to understand each of the steps when scanning and processing. Seems more suited to documents than film.VueScan does two different things: it scans an image, and then it processes the raw data from the scanner to produce a color-corrected image. My initial impression of VueScan is that it's very basic film scanning software, without much editing ability.

(About 50MB)Īnyone have any thoughts on this.? Is VueScan really that much better, or would I be better off sticking with what I know? One thing I don't like is that the files are huge compared to files of comparable resolution and in the same format as those from SilverFast.Ī JPG from VueScan is the size of a TIFF from SilverFast. The one thing I do like about it so far is that it has (a lot) more film profiles than SilverFast does. I can generally figure software out pretty quickly, but this seems pretty basic to me unless the advanced features are hidden somewhere. I mean, I can't find how to change any settings like exposure, levels, contrast - anything like that. Is there something I'm missing, or is everything just buried in menus? I can't even figure out how to make it show the histogram. I can't figure out how to do things that are very simple in SilverFast. I've skimmed through the user guide, and looked over all of the menus. I see a lot of people (including VueScan's website) saying it's better than SilverFast. I read in a few threads here people recommending VueScan, so I downloaded it (on the free trial now). I've been using SilverFast for a few years now and pretty much have it figured out.
